SACRAMENTO — Governor Gavin Newsom announced several appointments to state boards and commissions on Friday, Jan. 16. He selected individuals from across California to fill roles in medical oversight, environmental protection, and public safety.

Luis Portillo of Glendora was appointed to the Medical Board of California. In Los Angeles, Manjusha Kulkarni was named to the Commission on Asian and Pacific Islander American Affairs.

In San Diego, Emily Wier was appointed to the San Diego Regional Water Quality Control Board. This role must be confirmed by the state Senate and pays $250 a day. Additionally, Phil Ginsburg of San Francisco was newly appointed to the California State Park and Recreation Commission.

Professional Standards and Public Access

Several residents were reappointed to boards governing professional standards. Danielle Munoz of Long Beach and Michelle Edgar of Santa Monica were reappointed to the California Board of Barbering and Cosmetology.

For the California Commission on Disability Access, the governor reappointed Luciana Profaca of Menlo Park and Sarahann Shapiro of San Jose.

Infrastructure and Environment

The state’s water and recreation boards also saw several members return to their roles. Daniel Curtin of Sacramento and Davina Hurt were reappointed to the California Water Commission.

In San Francisco, Maggie Hallahan and Thomas Pier were reappointed to the California Boating and Waterways Commission. Francesca Vietor, also of San Francisco, was reappointed to the California State Park and Recreation Commission.

Public Safety and the Arts

For building and communication standards, Kent K. Sasaki of Walnut Creek was reappointed to the California Building Standards Commission. Jennifer Gonzales of Napa was reappointed to the State 9-1-1 Advisory Board.

Dorka Keehn of San Francisco will also remain on the California Arts Council following her reappointment.

These appointments are part of the governor’s regular duty to oversee state boards.
