HANFORD, CA — The Hanford City Council has unanimously approved a new 650-unit residential development by Lennar Homes, clearing the way for a major housing expansion on the city’s north side.
The council voted 4-0 to approve the project during its meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 20. Councilmember Travis Paden did not participate in the vote due to a conflict of interest.
Project Scope and Land Use
The development is planned for nearly 102 acres located north of Grangeville Boulevard and east of 9 1/4 Avenue. To move the project forward, the council voted to bring the land from Kings County into the Hanford city limits. The city also changed the rules for how the land can be used to allow for both houses and businesses.
The planned community will consist of 350 single-family houses and 300 apartments and townhomes. The project is planned for construction across five phases and includes a 5.45-acre site dedicated to a mix of homes and businesses.
Design and Infrastructure
Civil engineer Alex de Wiggins said the development will include about eight homes per acre. He explained that this design is intended to use the land efficiently and help protect nearby farms by keeping growth within the city.
To manage traffic flow and access, the project includes improvements to 9 1/4 Avenue and an extension of Leland Road. These additions are intended to create better entry and exit points for the new neighborhood.
Community Feedback and Upcoming Events
During the council meeting, two local residents raised objections to the proposal. Their concerns focused on whether there is enough water for the new homes and the impact of increased traffic in the area.
A "Council Corner" meeting featuring Councilmember Travis Paden and Public Works Director Russ Sterling is scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 28. The event will take place at Me-n-Ed’s, located at 2483 N. 10th Avenue, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
