CLOVIS, CA — Barnes & Noble is scheduled to open a new bookstore in Clovis between May and June 2026.

The store will be located at 1065 Herndon Ave., taking over the former JOANN Fabrics and Crafts space. That retailer closed in spring 2025 after filing for bankruptcy in January.

New Store Features

Plans for the Clovis site include remodeling the building's interior to make room for the bookstore and a B&N Café. The café will serve Starbucks beverages along with a selection of pastries and breakfast items.

The property is owned by Clovis-Herndon Center LLC, led by developer David Paynter. Paynter is also known for managing the redevelopment of the Sequoia Mall in Visalia.

Company Growth Strategy

The new store is part of a nationwide expansion. Barnes & Noble aims to open 60 new stores across the United States in 2026. This marks a significant shift for the bookseller, which closed about 100 stores over the last 15 years. The company’s current strategy includes both opening new stores and buying independent bookstores.

The Clovis location will join two existing Barnes & Noble stores in nearby Fresno. The company currently operates a shop at the Villaggio shopping center and a newer location at Fashion Fair Mall that opened in November 2024.
