BAKERSFIELD, CA — A massive pileup involving more than 20 vehicles shut down Highway 58 in both directions Tuesday morning as heavy fog blanketed the area near Towerline Road.
According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP) and reporting from KBAK/KBFX, the collision began around 8:07 a.m. on the eastbound side of the highway. The scale of the incident grew rapidly; CHP officials noted that the number of reported vehicles involved jumped from three to more than 20 within just 10 minutes.
The CHP confirmed that several people were hurt in the crash. However, the exact number of victims and the extent of their injuries have not yet been released.
Caltrans District 6 responded by closing Highway 58 in both directions. As of Tuesday morning, the highway is closed eastbound at Towerline Road and westbound at Highway 223.
Officials have not provided a scheduled time for the highway to reopen. Drivers are advised to use alternate routes.
