VISALIA, CA — The City of Visalia will begin the next stage of the Shirk Street widening project on Monday, Feb. 2, as part of an ongoing plan to help the road handle more traffic.

City officials expect to finish the current part of the construction, known as Phase 2C, by March 6. This section of work has closed Shirk Street between Pershing and Goshen avenues.

Phase 3 Details

The upcoming third phase focuses on the northern section of the road between Goshen and Doe avenues. This work is scheduled to begin Feb. 2 and should be finished by April 24.

As this phase begins, traffic patterns will change at the intersection of Goshen Avenue and Shirk Street. Currently, only the southbound lane of Shirk Street is closed at the intersection. Starting Feb. 2, the intersection will close to all northbound and southbound traffic on Shirk Street. While Shirk Street will close to north-south traffic, Goshen Avenue will remain open for drivers traveling east and west.

Detours and Local Access

The city will post detour signs at several locations to help drivers avoid the work:

  • Plaza Drive
  • Akers Street
  • State Route 198
  • Goshen Avenue
  • Doe Avenue
  • Hillsdale Avenue

While signs will detour most traffic, Shirk Street will remain open for residents, employees, and customers of businesses in the construction area.

Project Management

The City of Visalia is managing the project alongside two engineering and consulting firms, VRPA Technologies, Inc. and NV5.
